About the Bob Jones University's Musical Mission Team
|
This website was created and is maintained by parents of members of Bob Jones University's Musical Mission Team, primarily as a means of encouraging and reinforcing the prayers of the Lord's people for the spread of the Gospel through missions and personal evangelism around the world. Please enjoy reading about the Lord's work in and through this BJU team and remember us in your prayers.
Team History
Following a mission trip to the USSR in 1990, Bob Jones III, president of Bob Jones University, envisioned new opportunities for evangelism in the Soviet Bloc. He also recognized the drawing power of music, especially in cultures long closed to the Gospel. He thus gave the impetus for the formation of a new BJU summer team to Europe with the twofold mission of using music as a tool of evangelism and teaching Biblical principles of music ministry in the churches.
The first BJU Musical Mission Team arrived on the field on May 31, 1991, and ministered alongside believers in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine just weeks before the collapse of Soviet Communism in August 1991.This group was so warmly received by national churches and missionaries in both eastern and western Europe that the team's itinerary for 1992 quickly filled up.
Since 1991 more than 400 different Bob Jones University students have ministered with the team. The group has presented over 1400 concerts and services, concluding each with a Gospel message. For each concert the team presents choral music in the local tongue to minister to the hearts of believers as well as to provide a Gospel witness to unbelievers.
We have been hosted by national believers and missionaries in the following countries: Germany, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary, Austria, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Over the years as some fields have closed to the team's ministry, new ones have opened. Recently, for example, we have been prevented from going to Belarus because of new laws against Protestant churches there. But during this time we have developed contacts among national believers who enable us to carry out a wide ministry in Switzerland.
Missions Training
As a missions training team, the BJU Musical Mission Team has former members serving currently in the countries of Germany, Russia, Austria, Spain, China, Singapore and Chile. Other members are on deputation to go to Thailand, Cambodia, France and Germany. Still others who are completing their education anticipate serving in Europe in the years ahead.
Over the years team members have also distributed more than 1,000,000 pieces of Gospel literature, including Bibles and portions of Scripture, working both independently and with local hosts. Scores of people who have received these tracts and Bibles have sent us letters of testimony to their salvation.
The team also conducts seminars extending from one to three days on music and other topics of interest to local believers. Both students and faculty members with the team are prepared to speak in these seminars.
